Healthy Eating: Food Choices

Although it can be difficult at times, eating healthy is something many of us really prefer to do as often as we can. Most all of us know that eating healthy first starts with making the wisest choices in the foods we pick. To make all of the 'best' choices with ease, there are a few things to know about what the healthiest foods are to choose from.

Grains:

Whole grains are very important for our overall healthiness, and some form of naturally grain based foods are required daily. It is recommended that a good 6 ounces of grain types of foods needs to be consumed for the optimum benefits. There are many grain based products to choose from, including whole grain cereals, breads, certain types of rice, crackers and pastas.

Vegetables:

We all know that vegetables are very important for our daily diet requirements, but there are still many of us that do not realize just how important it is to always be eating a good variety of vegetables. It is recommended that we consume at least 2 1/2 cups of vegetables daily, and it is best to have them in the forms of raw or steamed, so to get the most nutrients out of the vegetables.

Fruits:

Fruits are essential in overall optimum health. There should be at least 2 or more cups of fruits consumed daily. Again, the same as vegetables, there needs to be variety in the fruits you eat. Fruits can be frozen, fresh, dried, canned and of course, consumed in juice form.

Milk And Calcium Foods:

Milk is chalked full of calcium and this is vital for the health of our bones. There are also several other vitamins that are essential in milk, including vitamin A and vitamin D. Adults should have the daily goal of 3 cups of milk intake a day and younger children between 2 years to 8 years old, needs at least 2 full cups a day. If you or your child does not like to drink plain milk, you may also substitute the many other milk based products, like various kinds of cheeses and yogurts.

Meats And Beans:

Protein is very important for energy and healthiness, and to get the most of our daily intake requirements, lean meats and the many varieties of beans are both excellent sources of protein. The ideal goal of daily meats and beans is at least 5 ounces a day. With your lean meats, it is best to bake, broil or grill them, so to produce the least amounts of grease during cooking. Along with good lean meats and healthy beans, there are also high amounts of protein found in the many different varieties of seafoods, fish, nuts and peanut butter.

By picking your foods wisely, making sure to properly prepare them in a healthy manner, and by always keeping your portions at the most appropriate sizes, you will for sure feel and look better. Even if you have not eaten in a healthy way in the past, it is never too late to start, and bad eating habits can be changed easier when you have the knowledge of what is good to replace the bad eating habits with!
